The Municipality
of

PARKS AND
BEACHES

Beautiful
Joe Park: A
charming and popular municipally operated Conservation area is located
on the banks of the Big Head River in Meaford. The Park was opened in 1963,
and commemorates Beautiful Joe, a dog that was rescued from the hands of
a brutal master (a local milkman). Inspired by the works of Marshall Saunders'
renowned book, Beautiful Joe Park offers a children's playground, a picnic
pavilion and beautiful, naturally wooded areas.
Christie
Beach: Located
6 km east of Meaford, this sandy shore is a local favourite. The beautiful
crystal clear waters of Georgian Bay offer a refreshing change on a summer
day. Picnic tables, washroom facilities and a children's play area are
easily accessible from the beach.
McCarroll
Park: A
children's wading pool is kept ready for the wee ones at this small park
located on Bayfield Street near the Meaford harbour.
Memorial
Park:
If you are a local or a seasoned camper you
probably already know about the beauty of this beach. If not, here is one
of our best-kept secrets for you to enjoy with us. Offshore sit the Sisters,
huge natural rocks jutting up from Georgian Bay, challenging the enthusiastic
swimmer to greet them. The crisp clear waters of Georgian Bay lap gently
and offer a refreshing change of pace to our busy lives. The shoreline
is naturally pebbled, and there's a children's playground, picnic pavilion,
clean washrooms and snack bar nearby. All of this make our local treasure
one we are proud of to talk about and willing to share.
Memorial
Park Beach: Safety
and the Sisters Local folklore has it that two sisters swam out beyond
their ability and drowned, after which the rocks mysteriously appeared.
While this cautionary tale probably sprang from the imagination of children
or protective parents, please swim with caution and watch children, as
the beach is unsupervised.
Raper's
Park: While
driving through Meaford, you'll be sure to notice this park, named after
one of Meaford's earliest settlers, at the junction of Bayfield and Sykes.
The eye-catching view of Cape Rich (Niagara Escarpment) off-shore is breathtaking,
especially with one of the gorgeous sunsets. A small children's playground
and a nearby picnic area may also entice you to stop.
