After shocks rattle region.
Owen Sound and the Meaford area were hit with three after shocks following last months 4.2 earthquake in Georgian Bay. Dr. David Eaton is an Earth Science Professor at the University of Western Ontario and says aftershocks are expected following a quake of that magnitude, although they were too small to be felt by people. He says their initial examination of data picked up by numerous seismographic stations show the earthquake occurred about 11.5 kilometres beneath the earth. Dr. Eaton says they now are trying to determine if there is any particular fault zone in the Canadian Shield under Georgian bay that may have triggered this quake. He says for some reason there is a lot of seismic activity under Georgian Bay and Western Lake Ontario and part of their research will look at what role large bodies of water may play in causing a quake. Dr. Eaton says they also want to see if there is a relationship between lower lake levels and earthquake activity, as the level of Georgian Bay has declined substantially over the past few years. He says one of the very interesting aspects of this earthquake is the fact so many people say they not only felt the quake, but heard it as well. Dr. Eaton says the noise aspect is a very curious feature of this quake.
