Fisherman's licence bought out.
Meaford commercial fisherman John Perks licence has been bought out in what is being described as a "negotiated agreement." That agreement between the Ministry of Natural Resources, Perks, and the Chippewas of Nawash and Cape Croker native communities. MNR spokesperson Steve Payne tells CFOS News there's only so many fish to go around, and when someone gets an increase in their fishing capacity, "someone else has to lose." The agreement will see an expansion of the native fishing territory into Perk's territory, running from Owen Sound bay, half-way over to Collingwood, and some 8 miles out from shore. An emotional Perks declined comment, saying he's simply had enough of the MNR, media, and lawyers. John Perks Fishery Limited operated a 32-year-old company with 4 employees -- the boats have been idle in the water since January. Payne says they're getting into the final details now in their negotiations with native fishers on their 2005 deal.
