Battle for Meaford Mayor underway.
The public got a chance to meet and question the candidates for mayor in Meaford last night. The big issues included the Genoe Landfill site and the Meaford hall renovation project. Incumbent Mayor Gerald Shortt is in favour of expanding the landfill site. Candidate Robert Reid feels the landfill site should be closed and candidate Wally Reif does not support the expansion of the site and feels there needs to be more alternatives for waste management. A few questions were also asked regarding the candidates position with the Meaford hall renovation project. Council has committed 2.3 million dollars to the project. Shortt is favour of the renovations, but says he would cut back on expenditures if the project came in over budget. Reid says something needed to be done -- whether to tear it down, fix it up or do nothing. He adds the no nothing option has been done for too long, and feels tearing it down would have removed an asset from the community. Reif is against using public money for the project, but feels the building is a fixture in Meaford.
