Grey Bruce Health Services - Meaford Site
MEAFORD
GENERAL HOSPITAL

Meaford has a 30 bed acute care community hospital serving the residents of the town and the surrounding areas. The hospital was constructed in 1952, expanded in 1972 and completely redeveloped in 1995. Most recently, the hospital completed a six million-dollar renovation/expansion program including the complete replacement of the Imaging, Laboratory and Ultrasound departments. A heliport was also added on the hospital property to accommodate Air Medivacs of serious emergencies to Tertiary Care Centres.

On April 1, 1998, the Meaford General Hospital entered into amalgamation with the hospitals in Markdale, Owen Sound, Wiarton, Lions Head and Southampton to be known as the Corporation of Grey Bruce Health Services.

The Meaford site provides 24-hour emergency department coverage with nine participating general practitioners. In addition, there are five itinerant surgeons providing services in orthopedics, urology, gynecology, dental and general surgery. Besides these specialties, there are several other physician clinics held on site including:

 Dermatology
 Plastic Surgery
 Neurology
 Internal Medicine
 Psychogeriatrics.

In addition to the Inpatient, Physician clinics and Emergency services provided, this site provides a wide range of Ambulatory Care programs including:

 Physiotherapy
 Chiropody
 Pediatric Speech Language Services
 Nutrition Services
 Mental Health
 Alcohol Assessment & Referral Services.

The team approach to care is evident in the variety of multi-disciplinary programs offered such as:

 Heart to Heart
 Diabetes Education
 Living with Stroke
 Osteoporosis.

More information about the Outpatient services is outlined in a brochure available at each general practitioner's office as well as various information centres within the hospital site. In September 2001, Grey Bruce Health Services received a three-year full accreditation from the Canadian Council on Hospital Accreditation. As a member of the Corporation, the Meaford site is a progressive community hospital continually seeking to improve the quality and quantity of services available to the residents it serves. There is an inter-disciplinary Clinical Services Team as well as a Community Advisory Committee dedicated to the development of new programs while supporting established services. With the guidance of the Senior Executive and the proactive attitude of the staff, the Meaford site is one of the finest small community hospitals in southwestern Ontario.
