| ~~~About the Meaford & Area Prostate Cancer Support Group~~~ | ||
| We fall under the umbrella of the Canadian Prostate Cancer
Network. The Group came about as the result of the Rotary Club of Meaford
sponsored Prostate Cancer Awareness Meeting of February 10th 1999. Aided
by excellent press coverage a capacity audience attended. That same evening
saw a Steering Committee formed that immediately set out during the next
two meetings to structure the Executive. It has been hard at work ever
since. Its mandate is that of informing men of the importance to seek early
detection of cancer of the prostate in order to effect the best possible
cure and in a supporting role to provide solace to those afflicted.
As a non profit organization we depend largely on donations to cover day-to-day expenses. The Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs both generously provided seed money, greatly facilitating start up. We purposely chose to remain self sufficient rather than impose on the in-kind services of the Canadian Cancer Society. Initially meetings were held every second and fourth Wednesday of the month but have since reverted to once-a-month meetings on the second Tuesday of the month. They are held at the local hospital and usually run from 7 to 9 p.m. Depending on the availability of qualified speakers, General Meetings are occasionally staged there as well or at an alternate place as advertised. We welcome both men and women to all our meetings. The current Executive is comprised of Walter Helwig, Chair, Allen Plater, Vice-Chair, Bill Alguire, Secretary, Maurice Brown, Treasurer, Ted Ormsby, Liaison.
