The Anglican Parish of Meaford began in 1856 with services held once a year in Stephenson's Inn. In 1861 the congregation began building a frame sanctuary - Christ Church - and it was consecrated in 1862, having cost a total of $600. The present stone church was completed in 1876. To this day, its beauty has inspired those who have been its members and those who visit.

Great to Humble
Fragment from Chichester Cathedral

Special and unique memorial windows at Christ Church were the inspiration of the Reverend Harold Appleyard, Rector of the Parish during World War 2. Harold Appleyard, on leave from the parish, served as a Military Chaplain during the war years. He noticed shards of broken stained glass around bombed churches. He gathered fragments and received permission from local church authorities to have the glass leaded and returned to Christ Church as a memorial for Canadian men and women who served overseas.

The fragments were formed into four windows and are the reason many visitors come to Christ Church. The church is open during July and August from 2 pm to 4 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday for viewing courtesy of members of the congregation. For tours, please call Sharleen Schefter at 538-3365. The Church Office is open on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 am to 12 noon. The church phone number is 538-1330
